The madness of Edinburgh during the festival is not for everyone, but luckily escaping is easy; the wilds of Perthshire are right on our doorstep. Last weekend we made our escape! Our favourite trip (for I think the 4th year in a row!) is to head up the M9, bypass Stirling and enter the wilds of the Breadalbane to visit the lovely Crieff, St Fillans and Loch Earn and to camp at the lovely Comrie Croft.
However, before we pitched our tent we headed for proper good brisk walk. Thanks to a little internet googling in advance (and some wandering around at the start, I’m not great without GPS!) we eventually managed to find the path known in St Fillans as the ‘scree’ in (it’s just a rocky path, quite steep though) which we’d read winds its way up the hillside behind St Fillans to reveal a fantastic view of the loch.
Look – it did!
I know the clouds are pretty heavy, but it still felt like summer.
After a last burst of energy to the top of the hill, thankfully the scree path then wound its way back to the St Fillans loch side. Where we happened upon the mirror man….Entitled The Still, he looks back from the loch to the Perthshire hills. The sculpture, by Scottish artist Rob Mulholland has been loaned to the nearby Four Seasons Hotel and reflects the changing light over the loch. I think he’s rather beautiful and is a worthy addition to one of my favourite Scottish views.
After the walk (although it was only a few miles!) we were rather ready for a drink, a fire, and a steak tea. All in all, it was pretty damn blissful… just like that view of the loch.
Isn’t Comrie Croft a lovely campsite?
I love Perthshire. OK, it doesn’t have the awe-inspiring sea coasts or scale of Loch Ness, but it is an incredibly beautiful landscape. The locals are friendly too! With folks offering bus timetables and stopping to chat as we hiked. It is one of my favourite places for this reason….
