we just keep on keeping on

I’ve been a little quiet about my most recent attempt to give up smoking, however, according to my stop smoking app I have now been a non smoker for 46 days / 6.5 weeks and, well, apart from err about 10 cigarettes on holiday now nearly 2 weeks ago a I think I’ve cracked it. I’ve yet to get pass month 3 (90 days) and I’m still wearing Stage 1 patches, after dropping down to Stage 2 my cravings went back up to mach-9, but I am being pretty stubborn this time.

However, along with the patches I do have a little secret; I have been using an electronic cigarette as and when I need it. Now I don’t see this as cheating as it helps me through the really bad times, plus one thing I have noticed is that there are no longer daily trips to the cash machine. I was taking out £10 a day to feed my habit. Cigarettes were costing me £135 a month; instead, an electronic cigarette starter kit from vapestick.co.uk costs £44.99 (reusable too) or a 500 draw disposable version for £9.99. That’s lots of dresses I can buy instead of cigarettes.

Plus there is no bad smell, no tar, no carbon monoxide (this is helping with my testing in 2 weeks) no ammonia, no life changing (or ending) illnesses (just yet) no orange fingers, no stinky clothes and hair, no going out into the rain, no being ostracised in the pub as the only smoker – a quick blast of my electronic cigarette and I’m back in the conversation and not thinking about missing being a smoker… plus, even though my skin is bad right now, I know the not smoking is helping in the long run. I don’t want to look like an old hag by the time I am 40 with pinched lips and dried out smoker skin. Yuck.

So, today is day 46, tomorrow is day 47. In the words of Curtis Mayfield, we just keep on keeping on.

Smokers, have you tried an electronic cigarette? What do you think? Have you managed to stick to using one?
